Findeisen “Nixenreigen Fantasie” now Available

Theodor Albin Findeisen (1881-1936) wrote Nixenreigen Fantasie, for double bass and piano, around 191Findeisen-Portrait0-1912, and the work is his Opus 9. Dr. Robert Matheson, bassist, composer, arranger, and professor has brought this and other works of Findeisen to light in his doctoral thesis.  Dr. Matheson has chosen ISG Publications to disseminate Findeisen’s compositions, that have been out of print or were never published.

Findeisen’s music represents the only compositions for solo double bass from the early twentieth century’s compositional style akin to Richard Strauss or early  Schoenberg. It is rich, full, romantic, and challenging, with full use of chromaticism and counterpoint.

“Nixenreigen” is based on a poem that tells of a musician’s walk home one night through the woods, when met by fairies frolicking about and dancing to his music. To have the double bass play the lead role in this story is quite a feat in itself. The entire range of the instrument is utilized in the composition, and even though the lyricism is beautiful, it is a wonderful technical challenge for any student or professional bassist.

ISG Publications is proud to present this newly published composition. We will be releasing other works of Findeisen soon.

Exclusive Editions of Luigi Negri

ISG Publications is the sole, World-wide publisher of the new editions of short opera buffa pieces of Luigi Negri.

Luigi Negri (1837-1891), like Giovanni Bottesini, was a student of Luigi Rossi, then the bass teacher at the conservatory of music in Milan, Italy. When Rossi died, Negri succeeded him as teacher of the Academy of Music (1858) and as Principal double bass player at the theatre  “Teatro alla Scala”.  In addition to the five pieces that ISG Publications publishes of Negri, he also composed “A method for the 4 string double-bass” (Ed. Ricordi – Milan) and “24 Studies.”

Negri lived during the 19th Century Romantic period, a period of intense musical fervour, when great concert artists began to achieve success. Although he was a very good musician, he didn’t get much opportunity and remained almost unknown to the public. Maybe this was due to the presence on the international scene of one of the great Lombard talent, Giovanni Bottesini from Crema called “Paganini of the double-bass” who, thanks to his fame, obscured Negri as a player and composer. Frankly we at ISG Publications feel that the arrangements that Negri did of the famous opera tunes of the day (by Donizetti, Puccini, Rossini, and Bellini) are actually better composed and are more accessible by modern bassists than many of the same tunes arranged by Bottesini.
Negri composed pieces for concert of a very high quality which, even if they reflect the taste of that period, include pages of great virtuosic effect, where he used all the technical capacities of the instrument.

See the all the pieces of Negri that ISG publishes. Individual pieces, two Capriccios, Reminiscenze, and two Fantasias are available in solo or orchestra tuning. And a set of all five pieces in one album, at a discounted price, is also available in solo or orchestral tuning.  On the ISG label, these pieces have been recorded by Patrick Neher

ISG Offers Electronic Download of Contemporary Compositions

At ISG Publications we are now offering some compositions in digital download form, at reduced price. You simply click on the Electronic Delivery button located in the description of the composition you are interested in, then you will be taken to a purchase page. After payment, we send the piece in PDF as an attachment to your email. You can then reduce and print to your printer at home. Each PDF is in the actual page size that we publish the work. So, if you have a large format printer, that’s best, but a 68 to 90% reduction works to get the piece printed on smaller paper. Not all compositions are available in PDF form yet, and we are focusing on those compositions where the composer has specified acceptance of delivery to the customer in this form. and we will be focusing on solo instrumental works at first, then duets, then larger ensembles.

We hope this new (for us!) electronic delivery in PDF form will be another attractive feature that will encourage musicians to discover the great compositions that we offer. See the present list of electronically delivered compositions in the ISG Publications catalog at

Viola Duo Sonata Commission Received

Scott Slapin and Tanya Solomon, professional violists presently living in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, have commissioned Patrick Neher for a new concert sonata for two violas. Target finish date is June 2012, when they hope to record the work for a new album. In 2009, Scott and Tanya commissioned a duet from Patrick, titled Canons and Dances, that they recorded and performed to critical acclaim (see their Eroica label CD titled Sketches from the New World available at Eroica and iTunes).

The new work: “… has beautiful lyrical melodies that are enhanced by the wonderful, dark and mysterious tone color of the violas. There are dancy, technical passages, and long swooping melodies that challenge the players and engage the listeners.”  Violists should take a look for it in our catalog, around June 2012. In the mean time see Canons and Dances in our on-line catalog.
